‘A Place To Call Home’ 

Gallery 1420: 9th December – 31st January

 
An exploration of what ‘home’ means- both as a physical space and emotional landscape. Discover how mixed media visual artists Lana Turner and Kimberely Harrison use a variety of art techniques to form a visual dialogue of place and memory, inspired by lived experiences.
 
*Viewer discretion is advised; exhibition contains sensitive matter. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times in the gallery space

Art Along The Border Railway Line Competition – Open

Design a Travel Poster
Young people in the South of Scotland are invited to create a promotional poster encouraging people to use the Borders Railway to explore key destinations in the Scottish Borders, Midlothian, and Edinburgh, with a particular focus on the Great Tapestry of Scotland in Galashiels. The Borders Railway, running from Edinburgh to Tweedbank, has 10 stations along the route, including Brunstane, Newcraighall, Shawfair, Eskbank, Newtongrange, Gorebridge, Stow, Galashiels, and Tweedbank.
The 10 winning designs will be digitally reproduced at A1 poster size, featured as part of a ScotRail tourism campaign, and displayed at stations and platforms along the Borders Railway.

Lothians Speak Their Name

Free Exhibition: Tuesday 3rd February – Saturday 28th February

Free Opening Event: Monday 2nd February between 5:30pm and 7:30pm

This event is a collaboration between Lothians Speak Their Name, The Great Tapestry of Scotland, YouthBorders and Borders Community Action. The quilt has been touring the region from October 2024 and is about to start a Scotland wide tour to try and encourage other regions to develop similar projects.


Lothians Speak is a quilt project honouring people who have died by suicide in Edinburgh and the Lothians. Forty-nine squares tell stories of love and loss, while bringing people together for support and connection as a community. Now touring Scotland, the quilt has sparked vital conversations, saved lives, and invited remembrance, dialogue, and hope. Join the conversation about mental health and about how to prevent future suicides corner and about making a memory quilt for the Borders

Bring pre-loved garments or fabrics and learn skills to reimagine.

19th February. 10am – 12pm & 1pm -3pm Print and Personalise
Using eco-friendly fabric inks and stencils for a unique creation

Two days of creative workshops where children will transform old clothes and textiles into imaginative fashion pieces, connecting with Scotland’s rich textile heritage while learning creative upcycling and reuse skills to help shape a more sustainable future.

Creative Music with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra

In partnership with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Great Tapestry of Scotland is bringing music to life for young people across the Scottish Borders. These exclusive, high-energy workshop days are all about having fun, getting creative, and making music together.

Inspired by Scotland’s rich cultural heritage and stunning panels from the Tapestry, young people will explore improvisation, rhythm, and sound through playful, hands-on activities. Expect rhythm games, musical warm-ups, group improvisation, and the chance to create exciting soundscapes using real instruments.
No experience needed – just curiosity, imagination, and a willingness to have a go!
