We’re super excited to kick off our very first 300 Words story writing competition!
Scotland has an amazing history of cool stories, and we can’t wait to see the awesome tales you come up with. With an exciting prizes for each category, grab your pens and let your imagination run wild – it’s time to show off your fantastic storytelling skills!
The competition is open to all children living in the Scottish Borders aged 7 – 15 so get ready for a super cool literary journey, approved by some of the coolest authors out there! Sir Alexander McCall Smith, Julia Donaldson, Jackie Kay, Damian Barr, and Alan Windrum are all cheering you on as you dive into this awesome adventure! Let’s make some incredible stories together!
The Great Tapestry of Scotland, conceived by Sir Alexander McCall Smith, is a visual masterpiece narrating Scotland’s rich history, heritage, and culture. This monumental community artwork, featuring over 160 panels, captivates the imagination of thousands of children and young people. Now, the Three Hundred Words competition invites budding writers of all abilities to weave their fictional tales based on the Tapestry’s myriad stories.
This competition is open to three age groups: 7 – 9, 10 – 12 and 13 – 15. The esteemed award-winning author Alexander McCall Smith, will evaluate the submissions.
Stories should be fictional, but inspired by the stories found within the Tapestry and a maximum of 300 words. Entries should be emailed to tapestrycompetitions@liveborders.org.uk no later than 5pm on Friday 3rd May 2024.
Please ensure the email subject is “300 Words” followed by the age group the entry is for. The email should include the name of the child entering, their age, their school and contact details for a responsible adult.

Terms and Conditions.
- This competition is open to children who reside in the Scottish Borders aged 7 – 15.
- All entries must be emailed to tapestrycompetitions@liveborders.org.uk and be received by 5pm on Friday 3rd May 2024.
- The email subject should be “300 Words” followed by the age group the entry is for.
- The email should include the name of the child entering, their age, their school and contact details, including a home postcode, for a responsible adult.
- The winners will be formally announced at a special event on 16th June as part of the Borders Book Festival.
- Each winner from each category will receive a prize of £250 worth of books that can be shared with their class.
