Could You Create the Soundtrack to a Journey Through Scotland?

What does a train journey sound like to you?

The rhythm of the tracks. The buzz of a busy station. The changing landscapes outside the window. The stories, people and places along the route.

We’re inviting S1-S3 pupils from schools across South East Scotland to create an original piece of music inspired by a journey on the Borders Railway.

Your creation could be:

• An original song
• An instrumental composition
• Lyrics or poetry
• A digital soundscape
• A GarageBand or digitally produced track

No previous musical experience is needed. Whether you sing, write, compose, produce or simply have a great idea, this is your chance to get creative and share your unique interpretation of one of Scotland’s most scenic rail journeys.

You can find Inspiration everywhere. Your musical ideas could be inspired by:

• The sights and sounds of the Borders Railway
• Scotland’s musical heritage
• The landscapes and communities along the route
• The rhythm and atmosphere of train travel
• Stories from local places and people

You can also draw inspiration from the Great Tapestry of Scotland, where a number of panels feature musical themes and connections. From traditional songs such as Flowers o’ the Forest to Scottish folk music, poetry, bagpipes or pop music, the tapestry offers a rich celebration of Scotland’s musical and cultural history.

CLOSING DATE – FRIDAY 23 OCTOBER 2026
