The Wild Woods
By Flora Graham, age 7
I was running through the woods that were my home, away from the wolves and bears that lurked in the vast wildwood. My big bushy tail helping me keep my balance. I was a nimble little squirrel and I needed to get home for dinner.
Suddenly I saw something weird, it didn’t have a tail and it walked on two legs. It didn’t have its own fur but it had brown, bear fur covering it. I was so scared I just scampered down the path and jumped over tree roots until I finally got to my house. It was acorns for tea which were my favourite. At bedtime my mother told me that the humans were moving into the woods. I was astonished, that must have been the strange creature I came across in the woods. But I didn’t tell my mother this because she might be concerned. So I went to bed feeling quite scared.
In the morning I went for a walk and then a terrible scene met my eyes. I could see a crackling, blazing fire was burning the human teepees down. I ran for my life trying to get away from the fire when I was surrounded by it. The hot blazing fire was to big to jump over and there were no trees to clamber up because they were all burning down. There was nothing to do! But then one of the humans came and splashed some sort of liquid on the fire and it disappeared. I was relieved and grateful. I tried to say thanks but the human didn’t understand me and he mysteriously ran away. I don’t know how he did it but he saved my life and that was all that mattered.
