300 Words: The Finalists

The Story of the Paisley Peacock

By Katy Gibson

Once there was a grey peacock. The peacock was very lonely. Then one day rabbit said “when you are older you will become famous because of your feathers”. Peacock said “your lying” and stomped away. All of the other animals kept saying that too.

It got too overwhelming so he flew away. Below him he saw an old man who had lost his cane, he helped him by snapping a branch of a tree and giving it for a cane. Then the man tapped his cane on his feathers and the magic from the cane gave him a little colour and the mans face appeared on his feathers.

The peacock flew on, then he came to a lady who had lost her earring. It was hanging from a branch. The earring was emerald green. The peacock gave her back her earring. As he gave it to her some of his feathers turned green and her face appeared within them.

The peacock reached a field surrounded by hedges. A group of children were lost. He flew down to help them and led the back to the village. Hs feathers became multicoloured and the children’s faces appeared within them.

From that day onwards he was known as the paisley peacock. He was famous just like rabbit said!.
