300 Words: The Finalists

300 Words: The Finalists

The Shield

By Maisie Brown, age 11

Digging calmly in her garden, Lidiyah was trying her best to feel upbeat. It had been a hard year after having to move home. Lonely beyond belief with only her husband to help, Lidiyah reflected on her new job working in the Scottish Borders countryside as an archaeologist.

Since she was six years old, the now wrinkly lady, had a keen interest in William Wallace. She was fascinated by how he lived and the people he fought for.

Suddenly her shovel clinked loudly against an object that sounded metallic. She dug herself deeper into the ground until she couldn’t see her house.

Two hours later Lidiyah had dug so deep her hands were bruised and sore, but she had found something, something she had never seen before… She had found William Wallace’s shield. She grabbed the dirt and rocks to drag herself up from the hole.

Lidyiah went into her home all muddy and bruised, she grabbed a rope from her office and took a stick from her dog, she plucked the stick into the ground and tied the rope around the stick. She then wrapped the old rope around her stomach and climbed down into the hole…

THUD! Lidiyah hit the ground with her feet while she dragged the shield out of the dirt, she realised she needed help so she called her husband…

30 minutes later, James, Lidiyahs husband unlocked the front door with a click, “Lidiyah! You needed me?” James said with a sweet voice.

“Down here James I got a little bit stuck in the garden” Lidiyah replied laughing, James stepped out into the garden and nearly fell into the massive hole “Wha-“ James said “Oh hey can you grab me please” Lidiyah said grasping onto the shield, James pulled on the rope as hard as he could while Lidiyah held onto the shield like her life depended on it.

The next day after Lidyiah had found the shield, she had felt her life had turned around and it was finally going her way. Yawning, Lidiyah awoke from her sleep. Lidyiah sprinted to her office. The shield lay on the table but little did Lidiyah know someone wanted their shield back….

“AHHH” Lidiyah screamed as she opened the door, someone was there and that someone was William Wallace.

“Who are you and why are you in my house” Lidiyah said walking towards the figure “Hmm, sorry can you repeat that. I didn’t hear you!” The figure said turning around, Lidiyah repeated herself as the figure tried to listen “oh sorry for misunderstanding you, I’m William” the man said “Okay but why are you here?” Lidyiah said angrily.

William picked up the shield and flung it in the air, “For my shield, you dug up my shield and I want it back.” William said.

“ No this is William Wallace’s shield not yours put it down now!” Lidyiah shouted.

“Exactly, I’m William Wallace. Why do you think I would come and steal something that wasn’t mine!” laughed William.
