300 Words: The Finalists

The Magic Needles

By Florrie Rose Bell

Hi, I’m Alana, I’m a mermaid and I live in the beautiful waters of the Atlantic Ocean with my big sister Pearl. I like to go and collect shells with her, but one day something spectacular happened that changed my life for ever!

Alana and Pearl were out in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean looking for the rare murex shell. It was their mother’s birthday and Alana knew she would love a rare shell. They each took something to eat because they knew it would be a long day, Alana took a piece of short bread and Pearl took some toffee.

They started by looking in the lovely rainbow coral, they looked, and they looked but there was no sign of the murex shell. Suddenly, Alana turned around and there, glistening in the clear blue waters was a shark!

 “Get down”

 Whispered Alana. Eventually the shark left. “Phew” said Pearl with relief.

With the shark gone, they returned to searching for the murex shell. Moving rocks aside, Alana pulled out a shell with excitement, but sadly it was not the one they were looking for.

Eventually, Pearl saw something shining in the distance, when they finally reached it;

“Wow, the marvellous, magnificent murex shell”

But what was hiding beneath, two twigs, a rolled-up ball of seaweed and a note that read,

“Use these twigs as needles and use the seaweed as wool”.

 “You’ve got to knit!”  Pearl shouted excitedly.

“You first” insisted Alana.

Pearl tried and tried but the twigs wouldn’t work for her,

“You try”.  suggested Pearl

Alana picked up the twigs and seaweed and knitted a perfect green hat in seconds!

Alana became famous for knitting hats all over the ocean.

And that’s the story of the magic needles!
