Support the Great Tapestry of Scotland
The Great Tapestry of Scotland is one of the most remarkable artworks ever created in Scotland. Across 160 embroidered panels it tells the story of a nation, beginning with the shaping of the land itself and moving through thousands of years of human experience. The tapestry traces Scotland’s journey through time: the meeting of cultures along the Roman frontier, the struggles that forged medieval Scotland, the intellectual flowering of the Scottish Enlightenment, and the enduring cultural voice of figures such as Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott.
Yet the tapestry is also a modern story of collaboration and creativity. More than a thousand volunteer stitchers from communities across Scotland brought the panels to life with needle and thread, transforming the designs of artist Andrew Crummy and the historical narrative developed by Alistair Moffat into a vast collective artwork. Today the tapestry has its permanent home in Galashiels, a town whose own history is deeply woven into Scotland’s textile tradition.
Caring for the tapestry and sharing its stories with visitors from around the world is only possible with the support of those who believe Scotland’s history should continue to be explored, celebrated and passed on to future generations. There are several ways you can support the work of the Great Tapestry of Scotland.
