300 Words: The Finalists

300 Words: The Finalists

In the Wild Wood

Bertie Hope-Jones, age 7

In the Wild Wood, Max the fox was looking in the river for fish to eat, there was salmon and brown trout. The fox looked upstream and saw Owlbert the beaver crawling out of his dam. The beaver had silky whiskers which shone in the sunlight. There was an otter next to the beaver. Her name was Amy. The beaver walked along the river and the otter walked alongside. They eventually got back to the dam. They both went into Owlbert’s dam, and it was very cozy and warm. They slept there.

In the morning Amy the otter found an osprey called Fin. Fin took Amy to the clearing… but fishermen were fishing there. They had harpoons. Amy the otter snuck past them and went back into the forest. But then she walked right into a trap! Amy felt very frightened. Meanwhile, Fin was flying overhead. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Amy stuck in the trap. Fin immediately darted to the trap. He opened the trap, Amy ran out and said, “we need to get out of here!”. They ran and flew back to the dam. Little did they know that the hunters were right outside the dam! Owlbert the beaver was hiding in the dam. Amy and Fin quickly hid in there too. They were very scared of the hunters!

They all went out of the dam when the hunters went away. They swam silently in the river, and they all had a big drink. Owlbert saw some fish – there were salmon and rainbow trout. Max the fox came running out of the forest and stopped when he saw the others. The hunters were running after him! All the animals ran away. They did not want to be turned into a pie! They all hid behind trees and stayed there for a while. They all hid behind trees and stayed there for a while. Then, when the hunters were gone, Amy, Fin, Max, and Owlbert had a big party! They ate lots of chocolate cake!!!
