The Great Tapestry of Scotland.
By Aleshya Ballantyne, Age 13
I sat there proudly staring down at the magnificent bird that I had weaved with vibrant colours, each separate thread representing the roots of Scotland. The golden yellow thread in his wings represented the graceful daffodils that struggled through the dirt brown soil full of nutrients, determined to reach the golden rays of sun beaming down on them. The royal blue of the peacock’s back represented the swirling ocean with sailing boats fighting through the storms determined to provide for their families.
The light blue from the chest represented our Scottish heritage running through our veins. It represented our clear lochs and rivers crowded with fish jumping through the ripples. The tuna teased the fishermen by swimming slickly through the water. The magnificent purple represented the heather that scattered the hill tops like a shield protecting them. Farmers trudged through the springy heather searching for a place to graze their snow white sheep.
The bright green of his feathers represented the long spikes of grass making up the fields that housed the livestock which supplied the local communities with food. The burnt orange highland cows with their long matted hair grazed on the deep forest green grass, standing there as a symbol of Scotland. The eye like feathers represented the staring eyes of passionate Scots in a trance with the Scottish rugby team, on edge to see if the victory will be taken by their team and the Calcutta cup will come home with them once again.
